(Re)Discovering Creative Expression: Art Therapy for Adults
A Maryland Art Therapist shares 5 ways that Art Therapy helps adults.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy promotes exploration, communication, and healing through creative expression.
Who is art therapy for? EVERYONE.
Many adults understand art therapy as an effective way of working with children, but assume it’s not for them. Why? Free creative expression is not prioritized in adult life, and we are out of practice. Self consciousness about lack of technical skill may inhibit us. We rarely make time for activities we’re ‘not good at’ and judge what we create against unrealistic standards. But these reasons are also why art therapy can be so revelatory for adults.
In creating art we rediscover parts of ourselves we thought gone, and open ourselves to new discoveries and joy.
Here are 5 ways that art therapy can work for adults
1. Non-verbal Self Expression
Many adults struggle to articulate their emotions verbally, either due to past traumas, cultural barriers, or simply because they find it difficult to put their feelings into words. Art therapy provides a non-verbal means of expression, helping people to communicate their innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences through images, colors, and symbols.
2. Accessing the Subconscious
Art therapy taps into the subconscious mind. Bypassing the rational, analytical part of the brain allows us to access deeper layers of awareness. Through the process of creating art, adults can uncover buried emotions, memories, and insights that may be inaccessible through traditional talk therapy alone. This can lead to profound insights and personal breakthroughs.
3. Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Engaging in artistic activities has been shown to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Art therapy provides a therapeutic outlet for releasing tension and calming the mind. The act of focusing on the creative process can induce a state of mindfulness, helping adults to become more present and grounded in the moment.
5. Catharsis and Emotional Release
Creating art can be cathartic, allowing for the release of pent-up emotions in a safe and supportive environment. Whether it's through painting, drawing, sculpting, or collage, the act of expressing emotions visually can be incredibly liberating. This emotional release can help adults to process grief, anger, sadness, or other difficult emotions in a healthy and constructive way.
Art therapy provides a unique and effective approach to healing and self-discovery.
By harnessing the power of creative expression, art therapy helps adults to access their thoughts and feelings, reduce stress, gain self-awareness, and lead more fulfilling lives.
