🏡 ABOUT THE PRACTICE — General FAQs
Q: Where is your office located?
A: Our office is located in Kensington, Maryland, a charming neighborhood nestled between Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Chevy Chase. We're conveniently accessible to families and individuals throughout Montgomery County and the greater DC area. We also offer telehealth sessions for clients located anywhere in Maryland, and hybrid arrangements that combine in-person and virtual visits.
Q: What are your hours?
A: We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate busy families and working adults. Our hours include weekday daytime appointments, evening hours until 8:00 PM, and Saturday appointments. We understand that therapy needs to fit into your real life — not the other way around.
Q: How many therapists do you have, and what are their credentials?
A: We are a group practice with five licensed therapists and a clinical intern. Our team holds a range of professional licenses including LGPC, LCPC, LCSW-C, LCMFT, LGMFT, LGPAT, and LCPAT. This breadth of licensure means we can serve individuals, couples, families, and children using a wide variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Every member of our clinical team has specialized training in ADHD, autism, and neurodiversity-affirming practices.
Q: Do you offer in-person, telehealth, or both?
A: We offer in-person sessions at our Kensington office, telehealth sessions, and hybrid arrangements. Telehealth is available to clients who are physically located in Maryland at the time of their session. Many clients appreciate the flexibility of mixing in-person and virtual visits depending on the week.
Q: What ages do you work with?
A: We see individual clients ages 4 and up. For family therapy, families are welcome to include children under 4 and pre-verbal or nonverbal family members in sessions, as family therapy is designed to support the whole family system — not just the identified client.
💳 FEES, INSURANCE & PAYMENT FAQs
Q: How much does therapy cost?
A: Session fees range from $60 per 45-minute session with our clinical intern to $235 per 45-minute session with Robin Brannan, LCMFT. Most of our licensed clinicians offer sessions at $195 for 45 minutes. We are committed to transparency about our fees and are happy to discuss options during your initial consultation.
Q: Do you take insurance?
A: We are an out-of-network practice, which means we do not bill insurance directly. However, many insurance plans include out-of-network benefits that may reimburse a significant portion of your session costs. We provide Superbills — detailed receipts with the documentation your insurance company needs — and we are glad to assist you in submitting them if needed.
Q: Why are you out of network? Is therapy still affordable?
A: Choosing to operate outside of insurance networks allows us to protect your privacy, avoid insurance-driven limitations on the number of sessions, and provide the highest quality of individualized care without being constrained by what an insurance company decides is "medically necessary." Many of our clients are surprised to find that their out-of-network benefits make our services quite accessible. We encourage you to call the member services number on your insurance card and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits before your first session. We are happy to guide you through that process.
Q: Do you offer a sliding scale?
A: We do not offer a sliding scale for our licensed clinicians. However, our clinical intern offers sessions at $60 per 45 minutes, which is a meaningful option for clients seeking affordable, high-quality therapy. Our intern works under close clinical supervision and brings both training and genuine dedication to their work.
Q: What is a Superbill and how does it work?
A: A Superbill is an itemized receipt that includes the clinical codes your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement claim. After each session, we can provide you with a Superbill to submit to your insurer. If you're unsure how to do this, we are happy to walk you through the process. Reimbursement rates vary by plan, so we recommend checking your out-of-network benefits in advance.
🧠 GENERAL COUNSELING IN MARYLAND FAQs
Q: How do I know if therapy is right for me?
A: If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or like something just isn't working — in your relationships, your work, your family, or within yourself — therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from counseling. Many of our clients come to us for personal growth, navigating life transitions, understanding themselves better, or getting support through a challenging season. If you're wondering whether therapy might help, that curiosity alone is often a good reason to start.
Q: What happens in the first session?
A: Your first session is really about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your history, your goals, and what you're hoping therapy will look like. At the start of our work together, we conduct a thorough diagnostic interview to make sure we understand the full picture. Following that process, we provide written recommendations to guide your treatment plan. There's no pressure — the first session is as much about you deciding if we're the right fit as it is about us learning about you.
Q: Is therapy confidential?
A: Yes. Everything you share with your therapist is confidential, with a few important legal exceptions — such as if there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or in cases of suspected child abuse. Your therapist will explain these limits clearly at the start of treatment. We take your privacy seriously, which is one reason we choose to operate as an out-of-network practice rather than involving insurance companies in your care any more than necessary.
Q: How long will I be in therapy?
A: That depends on your goals, your history, and the pace that feels right for you. Some clients benefit from short-term, solution-focused work over a few months. Others find value in longer-term therapy as they navigate deeper personal growth or complex family dynamics. Your therapist will discuss this with you openly and revisit it as your treatment evolves. You are always in the driver's seat.
Q: Where exactly are you located? I'm coming from Bethesda / Silver Spring / Chevy Chase.
A: Our office is in Kensington, Maryland — just minutes from Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Chevy Chase. Kensington is a small, welcoming community right in the heart of Montgomery County. If you know Kensington, we are at the intersection where University Blvd. and Connecticut Ave. come together… in the building with the big giraffe on the side! Whether you're coming from downtown Bethesda, the Silver Spring Metro area, or Chevy Chase, you're likely just a short drive away. Telehealth is also available if getting to the office is a barrier.
