“Good therapy is like listening to your favorite music. It makes you feel more like yourself.”
LGBTQIA+ Affirming Child and Family Therapist
Home has gotten tense lately. Talking to each other feels impossible. Like you can’t say anything right. You know the teen years are supposed to be hard. But should they be this hard?
Parents of stressed, tired, and anxious teens, I’m talking to you.
(Looking for a neurodiversity affirming therapist for yourself? I’ve got you. Skip to the next section.)
It feels like your last chance to make an impact. Your child is growing up. They’re full of their own ideas and opinions. And they want their space.
But the worry just keeps popping up. You see them getting overwhelmed, irritable, keeping to themselves more. Their siblings miss them. You miss them. And they aren’t asking for your help. You need a place where you can open up the conversation. Where you and your teen can both feel heard.
That’s where I step in. I help teens and their families figure out how to grow up together. So you don’t lose your connection as your teen figures out who they want to be.
You don’t trust just anyone. You need the right therapist. Someone you can talk to about school stress, work stress, relationships, and the parts of yourself that you’re still figuring out. Without it feeling heavy all the time.
There are lots of places in the world that don’t fit you. Therapy shouldn’t be one of them. As a therapist with my own set of marginalized identities, I am curious about and open to your full self. That includes the parts of you you’re most proud of, and the ones you sometimes need to hide. The neurodivergence that drives your success, and sometimes gets in your way. My office is a place to unmask, make meaning of who you are, and discover how to find more places that can feel this safe.
What to expect in therapy with Janae Freeman LGMFT.
You might be surprised to discover that therapy can feel joyful. You can leave a session feeling lighter than when you came in. More seen. Fully heard. Sometimes you’ll get there by talking, and sometimes with music, art, or other ways of expressing yourself.
We’ll start by setting some goals together. You’ll let me know what you hope will get better. I’ll be transparent and open about how I could help. I’ll tell you about the therapy tools I use, and ask what feels best to you.
We might use Narrative Therapy to explore your story, Internal Family Systems Therapy to find the strength within, and Emotionally Focused Therapy to connect your emotional experience to your sense of self. If school or work is feeling like too much, we’ll create strategies to make it more manageable. If family relationships are tough, we’ll do some family therapy to ensure that that gets better too.
Over time, you’ll start to notice that it’s easier to talk with the people who matter to you. You’ll set and honor boundaries. Your stress will start to fade. You might even get your work done more quickly or make fewer mistakes. And your vision for the future will seem clearer. You’ll understand more of what you do and don’t want, and have ideas of how to get there.
