Before your conscious mind even registers the pain, your brainstem springs into action, sending urgent signals to retract your hand. Moving up the ladder of brain development, we encounter the limbic system—the emotional epicenter of the brain. Unlike self-regulation, which relies solely on internal processes, co-regulation involves external support from a trusted caregiver.
